Duties

Duties are import taxes applied by the U.S. Government on goods manufactured outside the country. These charges are determined based on the country of origin and the item’s Harmonized System (HS) Classification Code.

Duties are typically calculated as a percentage of the total value of the item, and this cost is collected separately from shipping or other service fees.

Note on CUSMA/USMCA:
Many items shipped between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico are exempt from duties under the CUSMA

Transaction Fee

An International Transaction Fee is a charge applied by your credit card provider when you make a purchase from a business located in a different country.

Even if the store lists prices in your local currency, and even if no duties or taxes apply, your bank or credit card network may still apply this fee.

This happens because the card issuer processes the payment outside of your home country, and your card may not be set up to support international transactions without an added service fee.
